New Flagpoles at Hurlingham Oval
Wednesday, Mar 13, 2019
From day one we decided that all funds raised and contributed should be applied to a cause to secure a flag pole that all tenants of the ground could use to recognise the participation and achievements of our children enjoying multiple sports.
The night was a great success with contributions from AFL stars past and present such as Alistair Clarkson, Brendon Bolton, Brad Green, Scott Watters and AFLW stars Phoebe Williams from Geelong and Hosking andJess Hosking and Katie Loynes, from Carlton.
The paying guests were also very generous in supporting the live Merchandise auctions that were conducted with flair and verve from the BRIGHTON Buxton team who also funded a table a of 10. BRIGHTON Buxton are the proud number one sponsor of the Vampires Junior football club.
We also had great support from a number of AFL Clubs who contributed signed merchandise. A vote of thanks to the Demons, Pies, Kangaroos, Swans, Bulldogs, Hawks and Saints.
With the support of our local MP The Honourable Tim Wilson we received the gift of Australian and Indigenous, Torres Strait Island flags.
With Tim and some guidance from the former mayor of Bayside Felicity Frederico we lodged a successful application to the Salute the Flag Government Grant Program that has funded a second tribute flagpole to be located next to the World War One memorial at the oval.
Brighton Union Cricket Club and the Vampires seniors also contributed finding as part of One Hurlingham Oval unified response.
Both Hampton RSL and Bayside Council have been very supportive of these flagpole initiatives.
As per the attached photos, I am pleased to say that during 2019 as co-tenants we will be all able to fly the flag for our pennants and to pay our collective respects during ANZAC week.
The WW1 tribute flagpole is especially important to ensure our children, as the flag bearers of the future, recognise the scarifies made by our service men and woman in the past and today to allow them the freedoms and liberties they enjoy today.
A call out to the team at ABEL Flags who provided great advice and accommodated me with changed specifications for poles and pricing to make ends meet. A special thanks to installer Marty who laid both poles in 38 degrees heat with a smile.
So, the journey is complete and team Nebreda/Mount/Kimber have delivered on our promise.
Thanks to Ian Jensen-Muir for unwavering support clearing some speed humps and Karen Bennet and Jackie for making the wheels go around for approval and remitting funds.
