The importance of country football to the AFL has been widely recognised. Whilst it's a few years since a conclusive study was conducted there are believed to be well over 78,000 players in country areas with 22% of the AFL draftees coming from the country leagues. In total there are 82 leagues, 702 clubs, and 2,867 teams affiliated with the VCFL. With Vic Kick numbers in country areas approaching nearly 20,000 participants, the sport is in a very healthy state.

A recent project on Victoria’s Surf Coast highlighted the ongoing development and growth of the game, with a substantial upgrade of the Grenville Oval in Torquay. New 15 metre goal posts were supplied and installed, by Abel Sports, together with barrier nets to keep control of footballs off nearby Merrijig Drive. New coaches boxes, and Scorers boxes, were also installed by Abel ensuring the ground facilities were of a comparable standard to any in rural Victoria.

Abel has enjoyed a close working relationship with the Surf Coast Shire, and recent developments complement the excellent collaboration that exists, with Abel Sports equipment being installed on the adjacent soccer and netball grounds at Torquay.
